PC Andrew Harper’s killers will not qualify for early release scheme

The Prime Minister’s announcement that two of Thames Valley PC Andrew Harper’s killers who could have been released early under a Government scheme to free up space in prisons will remain in jail will be welcomed by police officers across the country, says the chair of West Midlands Police Federation.

But Jess Davies said no one would welcome the announcement more than PC Harper’s family, friends and colleagues who had suffered incredible anguish during weeks of uncertainty.

“Our thoughts remain with PC Harper’s family who have really been put through the mill due to this issue,” says Jess.

“Everyone within the police service is pleased that the Government has backtracked and found a way to keep these two individuals in prison. The petition launched by Thames Valley Police Federation to stop their early release was signed by more than one million people showing the strength of feeling among the public and we thank them all for their support.

“Thankfully, the Prime Minister took heed of the petition and asked the justice minister to act so we are grateful for that.

“It should never be the case that someone can take the life of a police officer serving and protecting their community and then not feel the full force of the law. They should never be eligible for early release from their sentence.”
