An anniversary challenge coin has been produced to mark the formation of the West Midlands Police Honour Guard (WMPHG) 10 years ago.
Founded on 31 July 2016, the Force’s ceremonial unit has become a key part of events, funerals and is often called on to advise on official protocol and operational priorities.
Sergeant Ben Westwood, head of the honour guard, said: "Reaching our 10th anniversary is a massive milestone for everyone involved and I am incredibly proud of the dedication shown by our volunteers, who consistently step up alongside their core roles to represent the Force with absolute respect.
“From delivering high-profile national events to supporting our own police family during difficult times, the team's commitment over the last decade has been exemplary."
Members of the team attend funerals for serving officers and staff, as well as those for retired officers and on average attend 60 events annually, providing specialised capabilities including standard bearing, colour party, pall bearing and guards of honour.

In addition to internal and civic events like the Chief Constable’s Awards, WMPHG regularly represents the Force on prominent national and international stages. Members have also participated in high-profile events such as the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the coronation of King Charles III, Remembrance Day in London and the Care of Police Survivors’ Weekend at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.
Notably, in 2025, the team successfully planned and executed the largest national parade for many years when the annual National Police Memorial Day was hosted by the Force and held in Coventry.
Formed entirely of dedicated volunteers from across the organisation, WMPHG brings together individuals from diverse units and backgrounds. The team includes members who joined with limited-to-no drill experience, working alongside seasoned ex-servicemen from the armed forces.
The team's contribution was officially recognised in 2021 when it was named ‘Team of the Year’ at the Force’s Excellence Awards.
To celebrate the 10-year milestone, the team commissioned the anniversary challenge coin. You can obtain one by completing this a form on a West Midlands Police device - Honour Guard Anniversary Coin Request.
