The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has faced two major legal challenges in recent years - resulting in settlements for both the pension discrimination and data breach cases. These outcomes mark a critical turning point for our organisation, allowing us to begin rebuilding with a renewed focus on professionalism, transparency, and member support.
To meet the financial obligations of these settlements, PFEW explored several funding options, including external borrowing. However, such borrowing would involve interest payments - ultimately increasing the cost borne by members.
As one of the largest branches, West Midlands Police Federation felt a responsibility to help reduce that burden, while safeguarding our own members’ interests. Over many years, we have maintained strong financial reserves and managed our funds with care. After careful consideration, we agreed to loan £1.5 million to PFEW under a formal legal agreement with clear repayment terms and interest. This loan will support the timely delivery of compensation to affected members, while ensuring that interest payments stay within the Federation, directly benefiting our branch and, by extension, our members.
This decision was taken only after detailed discussion and unanimous approval by the Branch Board on 19th September, followed by consultation with the Branch Council on 24th September. Transparency and accountability remain central to how we operate.
This is not just a financial decision - it is a demonstration of leadership, unity, and our commitment to rebuilding a stronger Federation for all.
Thank you for everything you continue to do in these challenging times.
