Good luck message to Bravery Awards nominee

8 July 2025

A West Midlands Police officer who saved the life of a woman being savagely attacked in the street by two dogs is this week up for a national award.

Sergeant Paul Williams will represent West Midlands Police Federation at the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) annual Bravery Awards.

Paul was single crewed when he arrived at the scene in Yardley, Birmingham, to find the woman being mauled by two German shepherd-type dogs.

The victim had been unable to sleep and had gone for a walk when she was attacked in the early hours of 23 May, 2024.

He got out of his car and attempted to use his Taser, but it failed to subdue the dogs.

Both animals charged at him, forcing Paul back into his car, before returning to attack the woman.

Paul took a second shot with his Taser and knocked one of the dogs to the ground.

The other animal latched onto his arm, but he managed to shake it off and return to his vehicle.

Intensive care

Both dogs were detained by West Midlands Police colleagues while the victim was in intensive care for four weeks.

Paul won a Birmingham area award at this year's West Midlands Police Federation Bravery Awards, an award sponsored by Axon

He also received the PC David Green Shield, which was named in honour of 20-year-old officer PC David Green, who was stabbed to death by a mob in Birmingham city centre.

Jess Davies, chair of West Midlands Police Federation, wished Paul good luck for the awards, which take place in London on Thursday.

She said: “We know all too well the threat posed to the public by savage dogs and often have to deal with the tragic consequences.

Terrifying

“Coming up against two angry dogs must have been terrifying, but Paul put his own safety on the line to protect others.

“But Paul showed incredible bravery and quick thinking to distract them long enough for the victim to be taken to safety.

“Paul did an incredible job in challenging circumstances, and there is no doubt his Paul’s courageous actions saved the woman’s life.

“On behalf of West Midlands Police Federation and our members, I wish him good luck for the Bravery Awards.”

The national Police Bravery Awards take place in London on Thursday (10 July).
