Copped Enough: Chair ‘sickened by attacks on officers

15 July 2025

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jess Davies says an attack on a police officer is an attack on society.

Jess said violence towards officers was ‘totally unacceptable’ and must not become part of the job.

She was speaking after a West Midlands Police officer was seriously injured as she tried to arrest a man in Birmingham earlier this month (July). A second officer was punched during the disorder.

The Police Federation of England and Wales recently highlighted the scale of attacks on officers at the launch of its Copped Enough campaign.

In 2024, more than 45,000 assaults on officers were recorded in England and Wales – more than 123 each day.

Attacked

Jess said: “The officers involved in the incident are recovering and being supported by the Force and the Federation.

“It’s sickening to see our members, who are doing their job to serve and protect the public, being attacked just for the uniform they’re wearing.

“They are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job. They are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.

“They put their lives on the line every day to protect all of us. And they should never have to tolerate any form of assault when carrying out their duties.”

Jess added: “We know that the vast majority of people support the police, but there is a large minority who, for some reason, think it is acceptable to attack us in our job.

“It is totally unacceptable. An attack on an officer is an attack on society, and the courts now have greater powers of sentencing for those convicted of such attacks.

“Our members have Copped Enough and things need to change.”
