Bravery Awards 'incredibly special', says West Midlands Police Federation nominee

10 July 2025

The West Midlands Police officer nominated for a national bravery award says seeing the inside of historic government buildings was ‘incredibly special’.

Sergeant Paul Williams enjoyed an exclusive reception in a grand state room at the Foreign Office ahead of the awards ceremony this evening.

There he joined other bravery award nominees from across England and Wales and met the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper.

After the reception, Paul and his fellow nominees and their families were able to visit Downing Street for photos and media interviews.

Paul said: “Everyone looked amazing. Seeing Whitehall and the Foreign Office from the inside is something the public just don’t get to do.

“Seeing all the history was incredibly special.”

Paul is representing West Midlands Police Federation after saving the life of a woman who was being mauled in the street by two vicious dogs.

He said he was glad to be able to share the experience of the awards and the events around them with his wife, Jemma.

Paul said: “Jemma’s experience of the police is me not being there at weekends, me not being there at Christmas and birthdays, me phoning because I’m going to be late home from work, me phoning to say I’m in hospital and have broken my wrist.

“I think it’s the same for police families all over the country.

“So getting to come to Downing Street with her, to meet the Home Secretary, and to have some time away is a really positive experience, and nice to be part of.”

He added: “Seeing all the other officers dressed in their number ones, speaking to them and hearing their amazing stories, it’s all been a really nice experience.”
