West Midlands Police Federation deputy secretary Tim Rogers is part of a panel of experts discussing Driving Change on the second day of our annual conference.
The theme of this year’s Police Federation of England and Wales’ annual conference is Policing Under Pressure.
It will include a discussion on roads policing featuring Tim, the Federation’s national pursuits and driver training lead.
Tim said: “We know that roads policing and the treatment of officers is a huge issue for many of our members. We’re making big strides with our campaign work and are having an impact at all levels from Government down but there’s still plenty of work to do and we’ll keep campaigning in the best interests of our members.
“It’s pleasing that we’ve got this opportunity at conference to discuss roads policing, the work we’re doing and how we can continue to make our voices heard particularly in relation to the changes in legislation that are intended to better protect police drivers but currently risk further criminalising them.”
Other highlights include two discussions featuring West Midlands officer and Federation equality lead Peggy Lamont.
Peggy will join national Federation chair John Apter, the Federation’s Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) and BAME belief secretary Zac Mader, and Professor Robert Beckford of Winchester University for a debate called Policing with Privilege?
The Challenge of Difference is the topic for the second discussion when Peggy will again be joined by Professor Beckford and Zac.
Also under discussion at conference today is Trial by Media, Investing in Investigators and Wellbeing - Whose Responsibility Is It? The conference will also shine a light on recruitment during the pandemic, the use of force and policing protests.
Day 1 highlights, along with the keynote speeches of the national chair and Home Secretary Priti Patel, included a discussion on Policing Under Pressure with policing minister Kit Malthouse, shadow policing minister Sarah Jones, Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, and Sir Thomas Winsor, HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary.
TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith spoke to some of the nominees for the Police Bravery Awards, while former political spin doctor and recent Good Morning Britain host Alastair Campbell hosted a discussion on pay, conditions and pensions.
