A raffle with a top prize of a holiday in France is being held to raise funds for Macy Handley who is having life-changing spinal surgery next month.
The 12-year-old, whose parents Toby and Kerry Handley are both West Midlands Police officers, has idiopathic scoliosis and needs a pioneering operation to enable her to live a normal life.
The raffle is part of an appeal to raise £110,000 to cover the cost of the surgery and post-operative care and also features a MAM ladies watch and an Amazon Kindle among the top prizes.
Tickets cost £2 each or three for £5 and details about how to buy them are available on the raffle’s Facebook page.
The West Midlands Police Benevolent Fund donated £5,000 to the appeal and West Midlands Police Federation has agreed to give the family £1,000 to help with the ongoing costs involved in terms of travelling to and from London for consultations, hotel accommodation and so on.
Toby and Kerry have thanked the people who have made the operation possible.
Kerry said: “We are completely indebted to everyone who has helped us. All too often in policing we see the challenging side of human nature but the outpouring of support from people, many of whom are complete strangers, has just blown us away.”
The fund-raising appeal currently stands at just over £94,000 – find out more.
• On Sunday Macy’s brother, Carter, and two of his team mates at Barkers Butt RFC’s under eights, were accompanied on a sponsored 10-mile bike ride by their dads and managed to raise more than £1,000 for the appeal fund.
