Remembering fallen colleagues

24 September 2020

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jon Nott says the National Police Memorial Day service is a chance for the police family to come together to remember the officers who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year’s service will be streamed online at 3pm on Sunday (27 September) to ensure that fallen officers and their families can still be honoured and remembered despite the original planned event at Lincoln Cathedral being cancelled due to the pandemic.

The website hosting the service is also hosting a tribute wall where you can share your memories and photos or leave condolence messages.

“The memorial day service is one of the key events in the policing year,” said Jon. “It gives us all the opportunity to come together with the families of fallen officers to remember their loved ones and show them that their sacrifice has not been forgotten.

“It’s understandable this year’s planned service has been unable to go ahead as planned because of the pandemic, however, I’m delighted this online service has been organised in its place.

“The tribute wall will also give everyone a chance to post their own messages about officers who have died in the line of duty.”

To access the service, you will be asked to provide your name and email address.

National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and has been held at the end of September each year since. It rotates around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Federation representatives, chief officers and the Home Secretary usually join the families of fallen officers at the service and the Prince of Wales, patron of the National Police Memorial Day charity, often attends.
