New guidelines as lockdown is eased

2 June 2020

The Police Federation has once again worked with the National Police Chiefs’ Council and the College of Policing to produce guidelines for officers following a further easing of the lockdown legislation.

Amends to the Health Protection Regulations came into effect yesterday, giving people in England and Wales more freedom outside their homes as long as they maintain social distancing by staying two metres apart.

“Throughout the coronavirus crisis, police officers have adapted to the changes to the Government guidelines and done their best to help protect the public and the NHS. Most people have been supportive of their efforts with officers having followed the Four Es of engage, explain, encourage and, as a last resort, enforce,” says Jon Nott, chair of West Midlands Police Federation.

“I would urge officers to read the new guidance so they are familiar with what has changed but also hope that the public will continue to do their bit by abiding by the rules.”

The new regulations give details of controls on gatherings and staying overnight at another address. The guidance to officers gives details of police powers under the regulations.

John Apter, national chair of the Police Federation, said: “This is the third time our colleagues have had to rapidly adapt to changes in the law and I have to say they are doing an incredible job. This is not a straightforward task for officers; the legislation is complex, confusing and is an awful lot to take on board overnight – but I know they will continue to do their best in these trying times.”
