Men’s Health Week: time to consider your wellbeing?

15 June 2020

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jon Nott is encouraging officers to use Men’s Health Week as an opportunity to take control of their health.

Jon was speaking at the start of the week, which runs from today until Sunday (21 June).

The week aims to raise awareness of a wide range of health issues that disproportionately affect men, and this year has the theme of Take Action on COVID-19.

Jon says it presents an opportunity for men to reflect on their health and to make changes to improve their wellbeing.

“The theme of this year’s Men’s Health Week is linked to the ongoing pandemic, which has brought physical and mental into sharp focus,” he said.

“We’ve all had to make changes to the way we live, interact with our families and friends and go about our daily business as we adjust to the new normal. And we know that the pandemic will take its toll. For example, men are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 as women. Online gambling during March increased by 40 per cent compared to the previous year. And in a normal year, one in four people will experience a mental health problem but that is likely to increase in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“So, we need to think about our mental and physical health and Men’s Health Week presents the perfect opportunity to do that. It gives men a chance to think about the small changes they can make now to make a big difference in the future. That could be exercise, eating healthier, getting more sleep or taking time out. Men are generally not good at seeking help but hopefully this week will make them consider their health.”

The Police Mutual wellbeing team has produced a free guide for Men’s Health Week.

“It’s really helpful,” said Jon. “It includes some useful tips to help improve your physical and mental health as well as signposts to support services.”
