Focus on your wellbeing, says Fed chair

4 November 2020

West Midlands Police Federation chair Jon Nott is encouraging members to use International Stress Awareness Week as a chance to focus on their mental health.

The week runs from 2 to 6 November and also includes National Stress Awareness Day today (4 November). They aim to highlight stress and mental health problems, raise awareness and promote support services.

Jon said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on people’s mental health, and it will continue to do so as we head into a second lockdown.

“This is why we’re encouraging members to focus on their wellbeing and to take some time for themselves.

“International Stress Awareness Week is a chance for us to make those small changes in our lives – such as getting more exercise, more sleep or eating healthier – all of which can make a difference to our wellbeing.”

To help, Police Mutual has produced a factsheet with tips on how to manage your stress such as exercise, organising your time and talking to friends, family or colleagues.

Jon said: “The factsheet is a good place to start, and the Federation’s Hear ‘Man Up’, Think ‘Man Down’ campaign encourages officers to take each other’s mental wellbeing as seriously as they take each other’s physical safety, and we would echo that message of looking out for each other.

“The Federation is also here for members so do not hesitate to get in touch with the full-time officials or your workplace representative if you feel you need some help or support. Often just speaking to someone else can help and we can also provide contact details for other organisations who can offer additional support.”
