Flint House re-opening soon

27 August 2020

Flint House, the police rehabilitation centre, is preparing to re-open after coronavirus forced its closure earlier in the year.

A limited number of physiotherapy patients will be able to visit the centre on a mostly non-residential basis from 7 September but some patients who have completed remote consultations may be offered a five-day residential stay following an initial coronavirus assessment and ongoing screening.

Tom McAuslin, Flint House CEO, said: “Re-opening in accordance with the Government guidelines has been challenging but we are pleased to be able to welcome initially small numbers of patients with a view to expanding those numbers safely.”

Around 250 police officers in need of treatment during lockdown were able to receive virtual physiotherapy programmes through the Flint House team.

Flint House, based in South Oxfordshire, is a police supported charity offering mental and physical rehabilitation to police staff. It offers a range of services which help more than 3,000 officers return to work every year.

PC Gaz Phillips is now back at work after being critically injured last August when he was run over as he and two colleagues tried to arrest two men in a stolen Range Rover. He spent two weeks at Flint House for intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation which covered everything from stretching to pain management classes.

Gaz is now doing half days in the control room supporting colleagues in the Central Motorway Police Group.

“Flint House was really beneficial to me and I don’t think I’d be back at work now if it wasn’t for them,” he said, “I’d encourage all colleagues to consider paying the nominal monthly fee to support Flint House’s work, because you never know when it might benefit you.

“West Midlands Police is under represented in terms of the number of colleagues who pay into the service, but it really can make all the difference.”
