Welsh Senedd building to be illuminated blue in honour of fallen officers

22 September 2023

Police Federation Welsh lead Nicky Ryan says she’s delighted the iconic Senedd building will be illuminated blue to mark National Police Memorial Day.

The home of the Welsh Parliament, along with a number of public buildings in Wales and various Welsh Force HQ locations, will be lit up in honour of officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Police officers, senior leaders and politicians from across the UK will come together in Cardiff on Sunday to pay their respects to police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the public.

Nicky said: “This year’s National Police Memorial Day is being hosted in Cardiff and I’m delighted that the Senedd will be illuminated blue for the event.

“It will be a powerful symbol of support and recognition of the dedication, duty and courage displayed by police officers who have died on duty.”

The service will take place at the New Theatre in Cardiff after organisers were forced into a late change because the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) panels led to the closure of the previous venue, St David’s Hall.

The doors will open at 12.30pm, with everyone asked to be seated by 1.30pm for the service to start at 2pm.

Nicky added: “I’m really looking forward to welcoming colleagues from across England and Wales to Cardiff for the service.

“It’s one of the most significant days of the year for the policing family.

“It’s a chance for us all to come together to pay respects to fallen colleagues and to show our support to their families and loved ones.”

First held in 2004, the National Police Memorial Day is supported by royalty, government and UK police services.

It provides a dignified and sensitive service of remembrance to honour the courage and sacrifice of the almost 4,000 police officers who have been killed on duty.
