Specials Constabulary Lead for the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) Nicky Ryan said: “I am extremely saddened to hear that Special Chief Inspector Chris Smith has died.

“Although I didn’t know Chris personally, it sounds like he was a hugely respected and well-liked character, who will undoubtedly leave a noticeable gap in the team he volunteered with.

Specials like Chris are integral to the police family, and I’m sure this news will have a great impact on everyone who knew and volunteered alongside him.

“My thoughts are with his colleagues, friends and family at this difficult time.”

Chris leaves behind his wife Kate and their three children.

Any officers who require support from the Federation are asked to contact their local Federation representative.
