Police officers deserve medals for brave actions

14 May 2024

Police officers who run towards danger deserve medals for bravery, Surrey Police Federation has said.

The Federation Chair was speaking after Home Secretary James Cleverly wrote to Chief Constables in England and Wales, arguing that rank-and-file police officers who show courage in the line of duty should receive a medal. His comments came after two Metropolitan Police officers were seriously injured in the recent Hainault sword attack.

Surrey Police Federation Chair Darren Pemble said: “Policing has taken a battering over the past 20 years, and many people are critical of how we police.

“We are accountable and we know this, but we should also be recognised for all the good work we do. The Home Secretary has this week advocated for our brave rank-and-file officers to be honoured with medals. This is long overdue, and we thank the Home Secretary for his support.

“We would welcome any recognition for police officers, as the recent Hainault incident in the Metropolitan Police area shows what police officers face on a daily basis and the heroism they show in the face of danger.

“Like anything in policing, it takes an age to effect change, so a speedy introduction of a Policing Bravery Medal would be greatly appreciated. We should not underestimate the bravery and courage of our police officers, who continue to carry out a challenging role protecting their communities.”
