Officers urged to have their say in driver consultation

27 June 2018

Officers are being urged to take part in a key Government consultation on the laws around police driving and prosecution.

The Government says it has completed its review of the legislation and guidance around police pursuits and whether ‘driving in accordance with their training and experience’ still might leave police drivers at risk of criminal or disciplinary proceedings.

The consultation will look at whether the law should change and whether it should apply to police response driving as well.

Other areas being looked at include whether the exemptions officers currently have from road traffic legislation should change, whether definitions of offences need to change to take into account police drivers’ experience and whether any new legislation should place blame on the pursued suspect and not the pursuing police driver.

The outcome of the consultation will shape future legislation and the PFEW wants as many members as possible to have their say via email or post.
