Federation stands with PC Andrew Harper's family and colleagues

Suffolk Police Federation has changed its social media profile picture to an image of PC Andrew Harper for 72 hours in a show of solidarity with his family, friends and colleagues.

The move follows the news that two men convicted of the 28-year-old manslaughter are set to be released early from prison under new sentencing rules.

The news has prompted a strong reaction from police officers across the country, with many expressing deep frustration and anger.

The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) has repeatedly raised concerns with Government about the inclusion of violent offenders who target police officers in early release schemes.

The Federation has consistently argued that those who commit violence against officers should face the toughest sentences and should not benefit from measures designed to ease prison overcrowding.

Suffolk Police Federation chair Darren Harris said it was time for the Government to that its commitment to police officer safety is about more than just words.

Darren said: “Like many of our colleagues, we have been saddened and angered by the news that two of the men convicted over the death of PC Harper are set to be released early.

“The strength of feeling among police officers cannot be overstated.

Greater protection

“PC Harper was simply doing his job when he was killed, and this decision will be incredibly difficult for his loved ones and for those who served alongside him.

“Police officers put themselves in harm's way every day and as a Federation we have made it clear that those officers deserve greater protection, not policies that risk undermining their confidence in the justice system.

“Changing our social media profile picture is a small gesture, but we hope it demonstrates to PC Harper’s family, friends and colleagues that they are not alone, they have not been forgotten, and the policing family continues to stand with them.

“Our thoughts remain firmly with them.”
