Home Secretary joins Bravery Awards nominees at Downing Street Reception

10 July 2025

Northamptonshire Police’s nominees for the 2025 national Police Bravery Awards have shared their pride after attending a special reception with the Home Secretary in London.

Ahead of the Bravery Awards ceremony tonight (Thursday 10 July), PC Anna O’Donoghue and PC Callum Simpson were welcomed by Yvette Cooper at an exclusive event held at 10 Downing Street.

The officers were nominated for their heroic actions in rescuing a driver trapped inside a burning car following a crash at a petrol station—risking their own lives to save another.

Speaking after the reception, Callum said: “It was a really good way to start a special day, and a great way for all the nominees here to get the recognition they deserve.
“In the incident we were nominated for, like all others, we feel that we were just doing our jobs.”

Anna echoed these sentiments, adding: “Someone has to do it, and we’re absolutely proud to - especially with occasions like today, where it is very nice to feel appreciated.

“It’s already been such an amazing experience, and we are very grateful to be here. We’re proud of ourselves and all of our colleagues too, who have clearly done fantastic work as well.

“It definitely feels surreal being stood outside Number 10, Downing Street, and it’s just a pleasure to be part of a day like this.”

Anna and Callum were joined at the reception by their loved ones.

Anna’s father, Finbar, said it was ‘wonderful to be involved in in the day, adding: “It’s just great for the politicans to take a bit of time out of their busy lives and show some appreciation to our police officers - not just for the acts of bravery, but for what they do every day to such an incredible level.”

Callum was accompanied by his mum, Karen, who shared her delight at seeing her son recognised: “It’s a very proud moment for me, because as a parent who worries about their child on the frontline of policing, it can be difficult, but something like this makes you realise they are doing what they love and that’s an amazing feeling.”

Branch chair Sam Dobbs praised the pair, adding: “I am so pleased that Anna and Callum get to enjoy all this fuss and attention, because it’s no less than they deserve.

“Being welcomed into Downing Street by the Home Secretary is an experience I’m sure will stay with them for a long time, and I’m equally glad their families got to be there for it too.

“Just like their loved ones, we are so proud of them both, and I hope they continue having a brilliant time into this evening at the Bravery Awards ceremony, where we wish them the best of luck.”
