Northamptonshire Police Federation

New Special Constables welcomed to Force

5 December 2024

Ten dedicated individuals were sworn in as Special Constables during a ceremony held last night (Wednesday 4 December), with branch chair Sam Dobbs in attendance.

The newly recruited volunteers were attested by two magistrates, with Deputy Chief Constable Ash Tuckley also present, marking the culmination of months of rigorous training.

The newly sworn officers come from diverse backgrounds, including chefs, a racing engineer, a personal assistant, and students.

Among them are individuals whose first languages include Polish and Italian, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Northamptonshire and bringing valuable diversity to the police force.

Sam, a former Special Constable himself, reassured the Specials’ families that the Federation would be there to support them as their loved ones embark on ‘this demanding yet rewarding journey’.

Experiences

“I welcomed our new Specials as Federation members and promised their families that we, the Federation, as part of the police family, would look after them as they ‘lend them’ to us,” said Sam.

He continued: “I asked the new officers to be faithful to their oath and use their own experiences, values and cultures to enhance our culture and to challenge.

“I also thanked the trainers for their efforts in turning these officers into professional volunteers. I take my hat off to them for wanting to give up their time.”

Sam, who was a Special in the late 1980s, reflected on the positive changes that have come with the role since his days of volunteering.

He said: “I kickstarted my policing career as a Special, but a lot has changed since then. And now look - I’m still here, more than 30 years later.”

Specials

The Special Constables received their postings and are now street-ready, prepared to serve and protect the communities of Northamptonshire.

The ceremony took place the day before this year’s International Volunteer Day (Thursday 5 December), an annual celebration that takes place every year, providing an opportunity to recognise those who give up their time to help others.

Sam ended: “Volunteers who work alongside our regular officers and police staff colleagues are an essential part of the policing family.

“I think we all appreciate their contributions to policing, but International Volunteer Day does give us a chance to show that appreciation.

Congratulations to all of our new Specials. I look forward to supporting you as you continue your volunteering journey.”
