World Suicide Prevention Day: it’s OK to ask for help

10 September 2025

On World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September), Gwent Police Federation is reminding colleagues that there is no shame in asking for help.

Chair of Gwent Police Federation Matthew Candy said: “We know the job can take a toll - the demands, the trauma, the constant need to be strong for others. But it’s important to remember that you don’t have to shoulder those pressures alone. Support is out there, and people will listen.

“If you’re struggling, please reach out - whether that’s to a trusted colleague, a Federation rep, or one of the confidential helplines available. Talking openly about how you feel is not a weakness; it’s an act of courage.

“Let’s look out for one another, check in with friends and colleagues, and keep the conversation around mental health going - not just today, but every day.”
