World Mental Health Day: police officers are not immune to mental health issues

10 October 2025

Gwent Police Federation is supporting World Mental Health Day and is encouraging members who feel low, stressed, or anxious to seek support.

World Mental Health Day takes place today (Friday 10 October) and raises awareness of emotional and mental health and help that is available.

Branch chair Matthew Candy said: “Mental ill-health can affect anyone, and police officers are not immune to it.

“The results of our own Pay and Morale Survey found that four out five respondents reported feelings of stress, low mood, anxiety and similar wellbeing difficulties over the past year.

“And the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) says that policing is now the profession with the highest mental health-related sickness rates.

“Policing is a unique role, and we’re exposed to more trauma and stressful situations than most other professions – and that’s before the strains of everyday life.

“Stigma around asking for help among police officers is reducing, which is great, but there’s still work to do, and events like World Mental Health Day help.”

PFEW launched its Copped Enough campaign earlier this.

Mental health support

Through the campaign, PFEW is calling for better protection and mental health support so officers don’t suffer in silence.

Matthew said encouraged members concerned about their emotional and mental wellbeing to seek early support.

“If you are feeling low, or you’re having emotional difficulties, then please ask for support,” he said.

“Getting help early is key to preventing issues from escalating.

“Please ask for help through your line manager or the Federation, and there is also Oscar Kilo’s new mental health helpline, which is independent and confidential.”
