Gwent Police Federation

Want to be a Fed rep? Nomination forms must be in by Friday

22 January 2025

The Police Federation embarked on its elections, which run for around 10 months, at the end of December with the first round of the process being the selection of workplace reps.

Those seeking election to the posts must self-nominate by Friday (24 January). Members will be able to vote for their preferred candidates using an electronic system between 3 and 23 February and the results will be announced on 27 February.

Any Federation member – constables, sergeants, inspectors, chief inspectors and Specials - can nominate themselves for election as a workplace rep.

Federation branches across the country are making a special plea to members from under-represented groups to consider putting themselves forward to become reps to help better reflect the diversity of the membership.

Matthew Candy, Gwent Police Federation chair, hopes as many members as possible will get involved in the elections, by considering becoming a rep and by voting.

“As I have stressed before, being a Federation rep can be challenging and demanding but it is also very rewarding as there is no better feeling than knowing you have helped a colleague in their time of need,” he said.

Support

“Many reps put themselves forward for the role after benefiting from the support of the Federation at some time in their careers. It’s almost like it’s their way of paying back that support.

“Others seek to become reps to try to bring about change. Whatever people’s motivation, we are really just hoping to attract the very best people for the role so that we can be an effective branch, able to properly support and represent the membership.

“All reps undergo professional training with an initial new reps’ course and can then access specialist courses on conduct, equality and health and safety. This training can also have benefits for reps in their policing role too.”

Successful candidates in the local workplace rep elections will form the Gwent Police Federation Branch Council and can then seek election to the Branch Board, the executive, and eventually regional or national posts.

Vote

The elections come to an end on 1 October 2025 when the new National Board will be in place.

Information on the first round of elections for workplace reps, including how to self-nominate and how to vote, were emailed to all members. They will have the opportunity to vote not just for the local workplace reps but also the local chair, in May, and, over the summer, the national chair.
