Thoughts with those who have died in Cleveland collision

Durham Police Federation is sending its thoughts to everyone affected by a vehicle collision in Cleveland that claimed the lives of seven people, including two police officers, this morning.

The crash took place on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, at around 3.39am.

Branch secretary Phil Stephenson said: “From colleagues in a neighbouring Police Force, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who have tragically lost their lives in this morning’s collision in Cleveland.

“No one should go to work and not return home. The news that two officers are among those who have died is incredibly sad and will have a profound impact on our colleagues in Cleveland, as well as officers and staff across the country.

“Police forces may be separate organisations, but ultimately, we are one police family. At times like this, we lean on one another for support, and our thoughts are firmly with our colleagues in Cleveland as they deal with this terrible incident.”

Phil also paid tribute to the officers, staff, emergency services and other responders who have been working at the scene and supporting those involved.

He added: “We know only too well the professionalism, courage and compassion required in moments such as these. To all those who have responded and continue to work tirelessly today, our thoughts are with you all.”
