Cumbria Police Federation Announces Response Officer of the Year

24 June 2025

A young-in-service officer who works extremely hard to bring offenders to justice, protect victims and show strong leadership, has been named Response Officer of The Year at the Cumbria Police Federation 2025 Recognition Awards.

PC Danielle Marshall joined Cumbria Police in December 2022 aged just 19, and has since excelled as a response officer. She is brilliant at driving investigations, giving clear and concise updates and providing good-quality victim care.

PC Marshall, who is stationed at Carlisle, has been part of some extremely challenging jobs, including a triple drowning at River Eden, a baby death only a week after, and a reported acid attack.

She has been praised for her hard work by colleagues from other departments, external agencies and members of the public. She has already started guiding and assisting new colleagues on her shift, all while working towards a degree.

One example of PC Marshall’s tenacity was when she conducted her own intelligence enquiries into a man who was Priority Wanted, coming up with a detailed plan. Once she identified an address, she tasked officers to go to different parts of the building.

Although the man wasn’t present, there was clear evidence he had previously been there. Danielle led this over the radio, providing clear updates on what she wanted officers to do. Senior colleagues were extremely impressed with her leadership skills. Her supervisor said: “Danielle is a born leader and I have no doubt that she will go up the ranks within the force.”

Furthermore, PC Marshall was named runner-up in the Safeguarding Superstars programme for a domestic incident she attended with a colleague. The officers spoke to the victim at length and identified a stalking offence, arresting the partner straight away.

The victim later disclosed extensive controlling and coercive behaviour and numerous historic rapes during her relationship with the suspect. Had the officers just removed the suspect and not taken the time to speak to the victim properly, none of these offences would have been disclosed.

PC Marshall said: “When I first joined the police, I probably couldn’t give you a reason why I joined. But having done the job for a couple of years now, what I love is the people I get to work with, and – even more so – helping the people who need it.”

She added that she was bowled over when she found out she’d won an award, saying: “It’s overwhelming that somebody’s seen me in that light.”

Cumbria Police Federation Chair Ed Russell said: “Danielle is an extremely hard-working, caring and proactive officer who is admired by both her colleagues on shift as well as the members of the public she has dealt with. Her level of maturity and how well she has adapted to the job, considering she had no policing background, is commendable. I have no doubt that Danielle will be extremely successful in her career within Cumbria Police.”

PC Marshall will attend the 2025 Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards on Wednesday 25 June. The Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards are in association with Axon.

Also sponsoring the awards are The Cumbria Police Group Insurance Scheme, Slater & Gordon, Uniform Mortgages, No1 Copperpot Credit Union, Serve and Protect Credit Union, Accord, National Police Healthcare Scheme, Police Friendly, and Philip Williams.
