Cumbria Police Federation announce Rep Of The Year

24 June 2025

A Cumbria Police officer who supported scores of colleagues and tirelessly advocated for a fair and inclusive workplace as the Police Federation’s Equality Lead has been named Federation Rep Of The Year at the Cumbria Police Federation 2025 Recognition Awards.

DC Maja Labram became a Federation Rep in 2019, later taking on the role of Deputy Equality Lead and eventually becoming Equality Lead for the Federation.

In the role, she sought out supplementary training and development to ensure that she understood this complicated area of work and could assist colleagues who may have been treated unfairly.

She recently left the post but she is being celebrated for her years of dedication to the role.

DC Labram originally decided to become a Fed Rep after she’d worked for Cumbria Police for several years. By then her child had grown up a bit and she felt she had more time to give.

She said: “The opportunity came my way and I thought, ‘Well I could definitely throw myself into this now’. I like to help people, I’ve always been victim-focused. Equality is something I’ve got a passion for, so that was the natural way to go.

“When I started, I did think, ‘What am I doing?’, but then read all the policies, all the documents, the Equality Act, just trying to do as much learning as I could. The role was challenging but very rewarding. The enquiries I dealt with were very diverse, including quite a lot of work around disability. I enjoyed it, it was so interesting.

“It was great to be able to help people, though there’s always people that you can’t help, and that plays on your mind all the time. I stepped down this year to look after my health, but I wouldn’t mind going back at some point, when everything settles down.”

She added: “When they told me over the phone that I’d been nominated for this award, I started crying. I couldn’t believe that somebody would vote for me and recognise the work I’ve put in. I was honoured and quite touched, really.”

Cumbria Police Federation Chair Ed Russell said: “Maja represented and supported countless officers, always with a calm and confident manner. She embodies what it takes to be a Federation Rep, putting others ahead of herself. She applies herself with genuine compassion to all her endeavours.

“We thank her for all her hard work as Equality Lead and wish her well in the rest of her career.”

DC Labram will attend the 2025 Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards on Wednesday 25 June. The Cumbria Police Federation Recognition Awards are in association with Axon.

Also sponsoring the awards are The Cumbria Police Group Insurance Scheme, Slater & Gordon, Uniform Mortgages, No1 Copperpot Credit Union, Serve and Protect Credit Union, Accord, National Police Healthcare Scheme, Police Friendly, and Philip Williams.
