Memorial unveiled for murdered Police Sgt Matui Ratana

25 September 2024

A Police Memorial stone was today unveiled in memory of murdered Metropolitan Police Sgt Matui Ratana.

His partner Su, his son Luke - a police officer in Australia - and many other dignitaries attended the unveiling in Croydon.

A Haka was performed during the service in memory of the much loved New Zealand born officer who was murdered on this day in 2020.

Sgt Ratana's partner Su Bushby praised his charm and sense of humour and said: “Matt exemplified strength, dedication and leadership” in his policing role.

“He died doing the job he loved so much," she told the service.

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said Sgt Ratana "had a tremendous gift for engaging with people.

“He left a legacy in so many ways."

The memorial is there to “remember him, his character and his sacrifice."

Members of the British Police Symphony orchestra played and a Māori choir performed songs.

Police Minister Dame Diana Johnson MP attended on behalf of the Government - she described Sgt Ratana as “respected, compassionate and dedicated”.

She said the “bravery and selfless dedication” of police officers “must never be taken for granted”.

“The memory of his service and sacrifice will live on," added Dame Diana.
