Federation reps earn national qualification
08 November 2016
Five new Federation reps have become the first to receive a groundbreaking qualification from the Police Federation of England and Wales and Skills For Justice.
The reps have passed a Level Four qualification in representation, which is equivalent to a degree level standard and can be used as credit for further studies.
Two of the five, Shane Schucroft, from Norfolk Police, and South Yorkshire’s Glen Suttenwood were presented with their certificates by PFEW Vice Chairman Calum Macleod at the Federation’s Headquarters in Leatherhead on Monday night.
“This is the first ever nationally recognised qualification that PFEW has done, that’s historic in itself,” Mr Macleod said. “Policing has always been professional and this is a way we can show that our representatives are the best equipped they can be to do their jobs on a regular basis.”
PFEW’s training manager Hayley Aley is confident that this is just the start for the Federation in terms of providing such a qualification.
“This is the future, this is where we’re going with the national Federation and we want more of it,” she said. “We want to encourage it across the country, not only to help those who are already reps but also to try to encourage more people to want to stand to be Federation reps.”
Receiving his certificate, Mr Suttenwood, a Chief Inspector in South Yorkshire, said: “It’s a proud moment and it’s testament to the Federation itself in terms of looking at getting some accreditation for the hard work and effort that goes in to supporting members.
“The initial reps course provides you with the initial building blocks to represent members, but the qualification gives you something to aspire to, to show what you’ve done and actually learn as well. The qualification helps you identify gaps in your knowledge and support you to improve.”
Mr Schucroft, a Road Policing Officer in Norfolk, added: “Getting recognition like this and having a qualification to back it up is the way forward. It’s good to get these opportunities and we’re grateful to our forces for allowing us to do this.
“I’d highly recommend any new rep to do this, it will definitely help anyone on their path to representing their members the best they can.”
