PC Phillip’s killer jailed for 20 years

21 March 2016

The man who killed the on-duty PC David Phillips has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A jury found Clayton Williams guilty of manslaughter of the Merseyside officer, but not guilty of murder.

PC Phillips died in the early hours of Monday 5 October 2015, after being struck by a van while attempting to deploy a stinger device to puncture its wheels. He was taken to hospital, but died a short time later.

Steve White, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: “While we respect the jury’s decision in this case, it is utterly tragic that a police officer lost his life while serving the public and just doing his job.

“Such a serious crime deserves a serious sentence and Williams should serve his full sentence to reflect his abhorrent actions.

“PC David Phillips’ family and friends have been left with a life sentence and Williams should also pay that same price. Our thoughts remain with PC Phillips’ family.”
